The United Nations has given the task to regulate the global seafloor to an obscure organization known as the International Seabed Authority (ISA) which receives little oversight. Here is where they work on “The Mining Code“.
ISA grants permits around the world. One site, extends across 4,500 miles of the Pacific, or roughly a fifth of the circumference of the planet. The Clarion-Clipperton Zone, or CCZ, extends across 1.7 million square miles between Hawaii and Mexico—wider than the continental United States.
A recent survey by Greenpeace concluded that mining waste “could travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometers.”
